Chapter 4 - Body Difficulty: JUMPS

COP for Dummies Rhythmic Gymnastics: Jumps

Welcome to the fourth chapter of Code for Dummies.

Jumps

Advertencia We remind you that: jumps are a gymnastic element executed with the push of one or both feet to achieve sufficient lift that allows us to fix a shape in flight and subsequently land on one or both feet.

The scoring code contains a wide variety of jumps, although it is true that many are not performed either due to their low value or their high technical complexity.

That's why in this chapter, we will focus on getting to know the jumps that are most commonly performed at an international level. This way, when you watch competitions, you will be able to identify them, know their value, and have a general idea if they are executed correctly or not.

How Jumps are Evaluated

Advice Before we delve into the most commonly performed jumps, let's see what the code tells us about jumps.

All Jump Difficulties must have the following basic characteristics:

  • Defined and fixed shape during flight.
  • Sufficient jump height (elevation) to display the corresponding shape.

WHEN IS A JUMP INVALID?

  • When there is a severe deviation from the shape.
  • When the gymnast falls during the jump.
  • When there is an apparatus loss during the jump (remember that if a technical element of the apparatus is not performed during the body difficulty - jumps, turns, and balances - it will not be valid).
  • When there is no technical element of the apparatus during the jump.
  • When the technical element of the apparatus is not executed correctly.

advice IMPORTANT TO NOTE!: With the current code, most jumps will be valid unless they show a significant deviation in the shape of the trunk or leg. It should be normal for an international gymnast not to make severe shape deviations, but if there are small or moderate shape deviations or insufficient elevation, the jumps will still be valid.

just does not make sense

So... if one gymnast performs a perfect jump and another makes some mistakes, do both jumps have the same value? Yes, that jump will be added to the difficulty score (as long as its value, we remind you, allows it to be among the 9 highest-value difficulties that are counted), BUT the gymnast who did not perform the perfect jump will receive the corresponding penalties from the execution judge (as we mentioned in the post, "How Rhythmic Gymnastics is Evaluated," execution is the section where the execution of an element is assessed) while the gymnast who performed the perfect jump will not receive penalties.

Through this example provided by the code (which in no case summarizes all the deviations that can occur when performing a jump), you can get a small idea of what could be considered a small, medium, or large deviation.

Types of jumps

Below.... the most performed jumps in international competition, you have the jump on video, its value, the symbol, and the drawing assigned to it by the FIG.

All the jumps we are going to see are valid, although most have execution penalties. When the chapter dedicated to the execution section in individual gymnasts arrives, we will recover and analyze the corresponding penalties.

Tooltip To follow each jump described below, we provide the structure of each table, super simple, for easy understanding:

  • the type of jump,
  • its value,
  • the link to the video ("WATCH VIDEO") where you can see, step by step and in great detail, the execution of the jump in question,
  • the symbol assigned in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Scoring Code approved by the FIG Executive Committee, and
  • the characteristics of the jump.
Stag Leap with one or two feet impulse with back bend of the trunk
Value: 0.40
1 Corza Jump with one or two feet impulse and trunk flexion backward
WATCH VIDEO
Know more  Both legs must have a minimum opening of 180º, forming a straight line. The front leg should be flexed from the knee, and maximum flexion is required. The head, when flexing the trunk, should be in contact with the leg. Contact with any part of the leg is required for the correct position. The jump must have sufficient height, and the form must be fixed and defined during the flight.

Turning Stag Leap spinning with back bend of the trunk
Value: 0.50
2 Corza Jump spinning with trunk flexion backward
WATCH VIDEO
Know more  This jump is performed by spinning and requires a minimum rotation of 360º. Both legs must have a minimum opening of 180º, forming a straight line from the hip to the knees. The front leg should be flexed from the knee, and maximum flexion is required. The trunk is flexed backward, and contact with any part of the leg is required for the correct position. The jump must have sufficient height, and the form must be fixed and defined during the flight.

  Split Leap with circle
Value: 0.40
Stride Jump with circle
WATCH VIDEO
Know more  Both legs must have a minimum opening of 180º, forming a straight line. The back leg will be flexed at knee height, thus assuming a circle position. Contact with any part of the leg is required for the correct position. The trunk must be straight. The jump must have sufficient height, and the form must be fixed and defined during the flight.

Split Leap with back bend of the trunk
Value: 0.50
4 Stride Jump with trunk flexion backward

Turning Split Leap (Jeté en tournant)
Value: 0.40
5 Salto Zancada girando Jeté en tournant

Saber mas  This jump is performed by spinning and requires a minimum rotation of 360º. Both legs must have a minimum opening of 180º, forming a straight line. The trunk must be straight. The jump must have sufficient height, and the form must be fixed and defined during the flight.

Turning Split Leap (Jeté en tournant) with circle
Value: 0.50
Zancada girando con círculo
WATCH VIDEO
Saber mas  This jump is performed while spinning, and a minimum rotation of 360º is required. Both legs must remain open at a minimum of 180º, forming a straight line. The back leg will be bent at the height of the knee, creating a circular position. Contact with any part of the leg is required for a correct position. The trunk must be straight. The jump must have sufficient height, and the form must be fixed and defined during the flight..

Turning Split Leap (Jeté en tournant) with back bend of the trunk
Value: 0.60
7 Salto Zancada girando con flexión de tronco atrás
WATCH VIDEO
Saber mas  This jump is performed while spinning, and a minimum rotation of 360º is required. Both legs must be open at a minimum of 180º, forming a straight line. The head, when bending the torso, must be in contact with the leg. Contact with any part of the leg is required for a correct position. The jump must have sufficient height, and the form must appear fixed and defined during the flight..

 "Butterfly" Jump
Value: 0.50
8 Salto Mariposa Butterfly
WATCH VIDEO
Saber mas  The free leg passes through a position close to horizontal (the first to leave the ground); the driving leg passes through horizontal (the second to leave the ground). During the flight, the position of the torso must be close to horizontal or below horizontal with a minimum turn of 180º from takeoff to landing..
